Eligibility

The Travel Baseball Program is open to residents of Somerville and surrounding communities. To be eligible for Travel Baseball, players must participate in the spring recreation baseball program. Players may be rostered by any town within the Somerville Baseball Inc. league.

A player’s age group (7U, 8U, 9U, etc.) is determined by their age as of April 30.
For example:

  • If your child is 8 years old and turns 9 after April 30, 2026, they are eligible to participate in the 8U evaluations and may be placed on an 8U team.
  • If your child turns 9 on or before April 30, 2026, they are eligible only for the 9U team.

A player can only be placed on a team if they attend one of the scheduled evaluations. Participation in Travel Tryouts is mandatory for all players wishing to be considered for a Travel team. The only exception applies to players who attend but are injured and unable to actively participate.

Players are required to register for and actively participate in the Spring Recreation Season to remain eligible for Travel Baseball.

Previous participation in the Travel Program is not required, nor does prior participation guarantee a roster spot.

Travel teams participate in both the Spring and Summer seasons, beginning training in January. Depending on team interest and scheduling, some Travel teams may extend into the Fall season (see details below).

Commitment & Schedule

The Travel Baseball program is a competitive-level program which requires commitment from both the player and the player's family.  Somerville Scorpions travel teams participate in the USABL spring program which runs early April through mid-June and the USABL Summer League or New Providence Summer League which runs for the months of June - July.  In addition, our Fall Travel Program thru USABL will run from Sept - Nov.

Teams may opt to participate in tournaments throughout the spring and summer season, and depending on the league or tournaments that the team participates in, may have multiple games in a weekend or in one day.

  • Participation in another spring sport is not prohibited, however, priority must be given to the travel baseball program. A player that commits to the SBI spring/summer travel baseball program is to give priority to the baseball practices and game schedule in-season over other sports and club programs.
  • Prompt and regular attendance is a must for all Travel players. Parents should plan summer vacations to avoid conflict with practices and games.
  • Frequent schedule changes are to be expected due to weather and changing dates in leagues and tournaments, so players and parents must plan to be flexible.
  • All SBI Travel Players are required to also play in the SBI rec spring league.

SBI is committed to putting together the most competitive teams with the most committed players.
